Disney to buy Marvel in $4bn deal

2009-12-01

Entertainment giant Walt Disney is to buy Marvel Entertainment in a shares and cash deal valued at $4bn (£2.5bn).

The deal means Disney will take over ownership of 5,000 Marvel characters, such as Spider-Man and the X-Men.

Marvel shareholders will get $30 per share in cash plus 0.745 Disney shares for every Marvel share owned.

The boards of Disney and Marvel have both approved the deal, which now needs the backing of Marvel shareholders and competition authorities.

Marvel shares were ahead $9.68, or 25%, to $48.33 in Monday trading while Disney shares fell 80 cents, or 3%, to $26.04.

'Great assets'

"We believe that adding Marvel to Disney's unique portfolio of brands provides significant opportunities for long-term growth and value creation," Disney president and chief executive Robert Iger said.

"We are pleased to bring this talent and these great assets to Disney."

Other Marvel's characters include Captain America, the Fantastic Four and Thor.

"Disney is the perfect home for Marvel's fantastic library of characters given its proven ability to expand content creation and licensing businesses," said Marvel chief executive Ike Perlmutter.

"This is an unparalleled opportunity for Marvel to build upon its vibrant brand and character properties by accessing Disney's tremendous global organization and infrastructure around the world," he added.

'Good deal'

Arvind Bhatia, an analyst at Sterne, Agee and Leach, said that the deal appeared to be a "win-win situation for both companies".

"They [Marvel shareholders] are getting a good deal in my opinion. The CEO of the company, Isaac Perlmutter, is also the largest shareholder of the company.

"From that standpoint, we think the chances of this deal going through are pretty high."

Last month, Walt Disney reported a fall in profits of more than a quarter as the downturn hit revenue at its film and theme park divisions. Pandora Jewelry

Net profit between April and June came in at $954m (£579m), down 26% on the $1.28bn the entertainment giant made in the same period last year.

Revenues of $8.6bn were down 7% from the $9.2bn recorded a year before.

La Roux leading Mercury shortlist

2009-07-22

Chart-toppers La Roux are leading the hopefuls for this year's Mercury Prize, along with Kasabian, Florence and the Machine and Friendly Fires.

Bat For Lashes gets a second chance to win the prize, while Glasvegas and The Horrors have also been given nods.

But hotly-tipped acts Little Boots, Doves and White Lies have been left off the 12-strong list.

Lisa Hannigan, The Invisible, Led Bib, Sweet Billy Pilgrim and Speech Debelle complete the list of nominees.

The award, now in its 17th year, aims to promote the best British and Irish albums of the last 12 months
'Massive honour'

Mercury nominees on being nominated
This year's line-up features artists making the list for the first time, apart from Bat For Lashes.

Seven out of the 12 albums are debut releases.

Tim Elsenburg from Sweet Billy Pilgrim said: "I was at work, fitting a toilet seat in Farnham, when I heard about the nomination.

"The two realities sort of collided and time and space went funny for a bit, and I may have just repeated a certain expletive at regular intervals for the first few minutes.

"We are very proud that our record - grown in my shed - has made such a good impression on the judges, and to be associated with the Mercury is a massive honour," he added.

Jackson fans gather at O2 arena

2009-07-14

Michael Jackson impersonators are among the crowd
Michael Jackson fans from all over the world have congregated at London's O2 arena, where the star had been due to begin his run of 50 concerts on Monday.

Fan sites and Facebook groups had been encouraging fans to bring candles and flowers for the vigil.

About 600 people are at the venue, adding messages to a wall of tributes and conducting Jackson sing-a-longs. Others are sitting in contemplation. christian louboutin

There is a "light-hearted, celebratory" mood, says BBC reporter Michael Osborn.

Fans held a minute's silence at 1830 BST to mark the time when the doors to the concert would have opened.

"I've come here to celebrate his life and I want to feel a bit closer," Alison Pyman, 27, from Cleethorpes told the BBC.

"We've been reminiscing and sharing memories with everyone. When more people arrive there will quite a party atmosphere."

Thirty-one-year-old Jasper Haughton is one of the fans who had been expecting to see his hero on stage tonight.

"We should have been going to the concert but we're standing here instead," he said. "It doesn't make any sense."

Haughton, who lives in Copenhagen, Denmark, will be in London for a week, having bought tickets for the first five of Jackson's 50 comeback shows.

"We're here for grieving, but the main thing is a celebration of Michael," he added.

'Last masterpiece'

Following Jackson's death on 25 June, floral tributes, christian louboutin shoescards and messages have been left outside the O2.

Another London location where a shrine to the singer has built up is the Lyric Theatre in the West End, home of Jackson tribute show Thriller Live.

Jackson's string of This Is It shows completely sold out shortly after going on sale in March.

Tributes were left at the O2 after Jackson's death
The singer told fans that the concerts would be his final performances in London.

Following his death, footage of his rehearsals in Los Angeles just days before he died was released.

While no concerts are currently scheduled to replace Jackson's performances, christian louboutin new yorkorganisers are discussing the possibility of staging a show using the production for the This Is It concerts.

"I think at some point we'll show Michael's last masterpiece, This Is It, to the world," AEG president Randy Phillips told Billboard.

Phillips added that 29 August - which would have been Jackson's 51st birthday - would be an ideal time for the event, but he was unsure if it would be ready in time.

Price and Andre 'get rival shows'

2009-06-16

Katie Price and Peter Andre are in talks for rival reality shows with ITV, which will follow them throughout their separation, according to reports.

The couple, who met on I'm A Celebrity... Get Me Out of Here!, announced their split last month.

A spokeswoman for Andre said filming for his new show was already underway.

Audiences for the couple's joint ITV2 show grew by 68% when they announced their separation after three-and-a-half years of marriage.

Katie and Peter: Stateside, which followed the couple's move to the US, is still being shown on ITV2.

'Absolutely amazing'ray ban wayfarer

Andre attended the International Indian Film Academy (IIFA) Awards in Macau, China at the end of last week, where he was followed by a camera crew.

His spokeswoman Claire Powell said: "We're already filming the show, I've just followed Peter to Macau in China which was absolutely amazing.

"It did him the world of good, and it was so nice to see him smile again."

Price's spokeswoman, Diana Colbert, told the BBC: "Katie hasn't signed a new contract. It is all open to finalising."

A spokesman for ITV said he could not confirm either series. "We are talking to both of them about future plans," he added.

Fly-on-the-wall

The celebrity couple have two children together - Junior, three, and Princess Tiaamii, who is nearly two.

Price has another son, six-year-old Harvey, from a previous relationship with footballer Dwight Yorke.

The former glamour model, 30, and pop star, 36, have made several fly-on-the-wall TV shows since 2007.

Filming for the latest series finished only recently. ray ban aviatorIn one episode, the pair were seen having a furious argument after Price claimed she was the main breadwinner in their marriage.

In the ensuing row, she said to Andre: "You're an old singer that no one knows about. I'm miserable with you."

Andre retaliated by telling the TV crew: "I'm so glad you filmed this, guys. When you show it back, you'll see what kind of a stupid, arrogant, miserable cow she is."

LADY BALLADEERS

2009-05-12

Many of the 42 countries vying for musical glory this year have plumped for the good old ballad, several of them delivered by solo females - historically a successful Eurovision category.

The United Kingdom - desperate to bounce back from a string of poor results - drafted in renowned composer Andrew Lloyd Webber to write blousy, theatrical ballad My Time.replica handbags

His young muse Jade Ewen has been tasked with hitting some high notes and delivering a touch of class to proceedings.

Fellow newcomer Johanna is hoping to steer Iceland into their second successive final, with a gentle song more suited to radio airplay than the West End stage. Designer replica handbags

But both singers are relative elders compared to teenager Christina Metaxa from Cyprus, whose winsome tune Firefly was penned by her older brother.

At the other end of the scale is Patricia Kaas from France - a smoky songstress with millions of record sales and reams of concert experience under her belt. replica watches

The singer said in a recent interview that her performance will be "simple, elegant and sober".

In another old school twist, the ballad delivered by male-female duets will be on show, thanks to Slovakia who are returning to Eurovision after 11 years in the wilderness. Designer clothing

Their dramatic offering is a full-on contrast to Croatia whose old-fashioned song is like a breath of warm Adriatic air on a summer's evening.

Talking Shop: Hockey

2009-04-29

That is all laced with free-thinking, freewheeling lyrics capturing the drudgery and joy of modern life.

Last year, they self-released their debut album Mind Chaos - the name of which was inspired by a university class singer Ben Grubin was taking, taught by bassist Jeremy "Jerm" Reynolds.

They were soon snapped up by a record label and have beefed up the album for a major release later this year.

Was the university class called Mind Chaos?louboutin shoes

Ben Grubin - No, it was our take on what was happening in the room as everyone was trying to get their ideas out. It was this endless clash of people never agreeing on a single notion for a whole semester.

Jerm Reynolds - The class was called The Great Remembering. It was an inquiry into the history of civilisation and the trajectory of the modern world, and how to move beyond the pathologies of the modern world, if such a thing were to be possible.

It goes to the future of what human beings are doing with the world and how to begin to heal and evolve, rather than create a world that's fundamentally destructive and toxic. That's why a lot of people had a lot of things to say.

What was the ethos of the university [University of Redlands, California]?

Hockey singer Ben Grubin graduated in music and poetry
BG - You could make your own major. Study what you want and graduate.

JR - We ended up doing a lot of music and getting credit for it. It attracted a lot of interesting minds. You created an emphasis, rather than just getting plugged into a major.

People would mix very different things - psychology and Buddhism, or meditation and chemistry. Anything you could come up with that you could justify to a panel of professors. christian louboutin shoes

Which I think was fantastic - it's what university education should be for everyone. It's a time to explore the world and explore what moves you.

Would you describe yourselves as hippies?

JR - Um... yeah, we can say we're hippies. We'd take that.

Take me to the place where you recorded Mind Chaos.

JR - We moved into this really old house in Portland and the guy who lived there before had walled off this part of the basement on two sides. The other two sides were the foundations of the house with mould and dirt.

It was exactly what we needed to play music in and not disturb people. We put a piece of carpet down but it was unheated and had a dampness to it. Benny actually had a problem with his feet from spending too much time working on the album. christian louboutin

BG - It was freezing cold down there and my feet were absolutely enraged. I had a huge beard and looked like a madman.

JR - They puffed up all red. He'd wear this gigantic Parka with a fake fur hood and be down at the computer mixing the album.

Anthony Stassi [drummer] - Jerm and I were genuinely concerned for Ben's sanity throughout that four or five month period.

What is your favourite lyric from one of your songs?

BG - I like the first line of Song Away. "Make me a deal and make it good for me/I won't get full of myself, 'till I can't afford to be."

Just because it's honest. If I become arrogant, at least you trust me to explain to you why I've become arrogant.

If you could live in a different musical era, what would you choose?

JR - It's a very exciting time right now. Music is coming back in a big way, in a more ensouled, positive, artistic and expressive way than it was when we were growing up.

We all joke about growing up in the '90s and what a drag that was. There was man rock and boy bands. It wasn't very inspiring and I think the culture is moving towards something that's more expressive and interesting.

You're from the home of grunge - there's not much more expressive than that.

JR - There was good music around grunge but I don't think we draw a lot of influence from them.

Brian White [guitar] - The energy of that music was genuine and good, and bands still exude that same energy, but not in a rebellious way. Now the music's more expressive and a little happier.

AS - The '90s were dark because there wasn't that much to be dark about. Now there are lots of genuine things to be dark about, so people just want music to be an escape. But a positive escape, not an ignorant escape.

Hockey's new single Learn To Lose is out in the UK on 1 June. The band were talking to BBC music reporter Ian Youngs.

Snoop Dogg fan 'left for dead'

2009-04-27

A man suing rapper Snoop Dogg has told a court he received a "brutal" beating from the star's security, according to the Associated Press.

Richard Monroe Jr also claims that the rapper, whose real name is Calvin Broadus, hit him with a microphone after the fan tried to climb on stage.

Mr Broadus was in court and took notes as a lawyer for Mr Monroe said he had been "left for dead" at the 2005 gig.

The defence responded that Mr Monroe's description of events was exaggerated.

A jury heard opening statements from both sides in the civil suit which Mr Monroe originally filed in 2006. Mr Monroe is asking for $22m (£15m) in damages from the rapper and others.

'In shock' replica watches

Jurors were told that as the performer launched into his hit, Gin and Juice, at the White River Amphitheatre in Seattle, Mr Monroe thought there was an open invitation to go up on stage and party.

Associated Press reports that Mr Monroe told the court: "I was having fun, I was excited. Snoop was in the house".

Mr Monroe jumped on stage and put his hand on the rapper's shoulder. He claims the star then hit him over the head with a microphone before the security began to attack him.

Mr Monroe told jurors: "I was getting punched, kicked, kicked, punched. It was brutal. I was really in shock. I couldn't believe it."

Mr Broadus' lawyer, Hayes Michel, said that a video of the incident did not show the rapper hitting Mr Monroe and there was no reason for him to pay damages.

Jurors were shown the video. Mr Michel told them: "Mr Broadus thought he was being attacked," and said that the rapper's security had acted swiftly against Mr Monroe because the fan was struggling against them.

The lawyer also claimed that Mr Monroe had repeatedly changed both his story about the event and his description to doctors of his injuries and concluded "it's not the evidence of someone who was savagely beaten."

Mr Broadus, who runs his own production company and and played Huggy Bear in the 2004 remake of Starsky & Hutch, is expected to give evidence as the case continues in Santa Monica. replica handbags

Saudis ban 'lewd' number plates

2009-04-13

Saudi Arabia has banned vehicle number plates which are seen as "offensive" in English when Arabic letters are given in the Latin alphabet, reports say.

Saudi newspaper al-Watan said the banned words included "sex" and "ass", but the list was topped by "USA".

Al-Watan said 90,000 existing plates were to be replaced.

Personalised plates are popular with wealthy young Saudis. One plate recently sold at auction for 6m riyals ($1.2m), the newspaper reported. louboutin shoes

Newer Saudi plates include three Arabic letters that are also shown in the Latin alphabet.

The growing fashion is for car owners to buy personalised "vanity" plates that deliberately read "nut", "but", "bad", or "bar" in English. louboutin shoe sale

The latter presumably has been deemed offensive as it relates to alcohol, which is banned in the Islamic kingdom, the AFP news agency reports.

The first on the list, for unexplained reasons, is the combination "USA".
